Grace Powers Obituary

Grace Marie Powers, of Delphi, Indiana, passed away peacefully on November 15, 2023, surrounded by family and close friends. Grace is survived by her mother Helen (nee Onak) Powers, her sisters Natalie (Patrick) Dempsey, Jackie (Ken Hazel) Powers, and brothers John (Mary) Powers and Eric Powers.  Auntie Grace was absolutely delighted in the company of her beloved nieces and nephews, Brendan, Julia and Cora Dempsey, Jeffrey Feliczak, Jacob (Emily) and Melanie Powers, Max, Leo and Zac Powers. Grace is predeceased by her father, Gracson Powers, brother Paul Powers, and niece Rachel Powers. Grace had many loving aunts, uncles and cousins.

Grace was born in Harvey, Illinois, the second oldest of six, and was an honor student through high school. She earned many Girl Scout badges and went to camp for a few years.  She twirled a fire baton in parades and danced on the high school squad. After earning a Medical Assistant degree, she moved to Chicago and worked for over two decades as an office manager and medical assistant at world-class hospitals. Grace became a Master Gardener and logged countless hours volunteering at Lincoln Park Zoo. She participated in the NY City Marathon as a guide for blind runners. Grace was a two-time breast cancer survivor and participated in the Avon Walk for the Cure. She loved hosting parties, cooking for the family, and adventuring to Mardi Gras, the Chicago Blues Fest, and other celebratory venues. She traveled through Germany, Ireland and many North Woods outings.

Grace transitioned to the countryside of central Indiana, settling in the quaint river town of Delphi, still serving others through the food service industry where she was beloved by her "regulars."  She was a wonderful cook, one of her life-long hobbies, along with gardening.  She enjoyed a lovely pond and three-seasons of blooms on her property. The Chicago Bears football team was her passion, and she never missed a game.

Grace will be remembered as a genuinely nice person. She would buy the first round, keep your secrets, landscape your house, and show up in your time of need. Her passing has left a hole in the hearts of those she has left behind.

Funeral visitation services will be held at Lord of Mercy Catholic Church (formerly St. John the Baptist Church) located at 15746 Union Ave, Harvey, IL on Saturday, November 25th from 10:00 - 11:30 am, with mass at 11:30, followed by a luncheon.
